It's Tax Season...yahoo

It’s tax time. Oh-happy-day. Did you know most Americans expect to receive a refund from the IRS this tax season (according to the results of TD Ameritrade’s annual tax investment sentiment survey)? Last year the average return was $2,782. That’s a lot of money!

This year Tax Day falls on a Monday…providing a long weekend for the procrastinators among us! Hopefully, most of us won’t be burning the midnight oil and will be prepared well in advance. Locally, you can check the hours of operation for Crooked Hill and Camp Hill Post offices to be sure you’re not late.

Last year’s Tax Cut and Jobs Act introduced many new changes to the tax code. There are new standard deductions and the Child Tax Credit has doubled. Also, several important deductions are going away. See below for a quick overview of the changes.

The fastest way to get your return is to file online. Paper returns require government workers to input and process your filing, so the entire process takes much longer. If you’re considering using a tax pro and need a recommendation, I highly recommend Mark L. Wetzel, CPA. Mark’s firm has been serving Central PA since 2003 and is in Mechanicsburg.

Another local service for taxes is the Money in Your Pocket campaign run by the Untied Way of the Capital Area. Volunteers prepare computerized, electronic returns through the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Tax Income Assistance (VITA) program, which is designed to provide low- to moderate-income working families with help completing federal and state returns and obtaining credits for which they are eligible. If you have the skill and the time, you can volunteer to help by contacting Heidi Neuhaus, Director of the Volunteer Center. BUT, if you're doing taxes yourself, check here for info you may need to know.
